Job Description
CBS Studios daily animated variety series STEPHEN COLBERT PRESENTS TOONING OUT THE NEWS seeks a Researcher with journalism and/or network/cable news, backgrounds. The series will be remote but NYC residents are preferred. STEPHEN COLBERT PRESENTS TOONING OUT THE NEWS is a variety series featuring a cast of animated characters mocking real-world events the same day that they happen, and even interviewing real-world guests and newsmakers. The ideal candidate is accustomed to looking beyond the headlines and searching deeper to find the news that everyone else is missing.
Responsibilities:
Provide the writers with a daily summary and digested account of top stories.
Conduct deep dives into specific stories, preparing guest research, and supporting field.
Identify hypocrisy, illogical arguments, and magical thinking deployed by newsmakers on both sides of the aisle.
Qualifications:
Undergraduate degree or equivalent work experience.
Strong editorial judgement as to what stories work for our audience and which facts/details are relevant to our show.
Strong grasp of political news and knowledge of the inner workings of government.
Experience in research for a news outlet or similar platform.
At least two years of television production, journalism, academic research or equivalent.
Acute attention to detail.
Interest in all genre of news – political, entertainment/pop culture, domestic, international.
Have strong working knowledge of national politics and an ability to find and report breaking news.
Comfortable digging through FEC reports and 990s of charitable foundations.
Comfortable calling Congressional offices or outside experts to further original reporting.
Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
